Many of you have been asking how I did my GM Ls2 coil pack swap, so here is my write up on how to do it step by step. Before we get started I thought I would give a little explanation on why this is beneficial to us. In the quest to achieve higher and higher horsepower levels, there comes a time where we need to upgrade the ignition system. As we increase boost and hp levels, we always need to increase fuel injectors, intercoolers, piping, exhaust Etc.
Now before anyone gets all upset with me here, yes Nissan did a great job with the ignition system on the z But as we all know, this was way back in the 's. As with everything, times have changed and technology has made great improvements! As we start increasing the boost levels to north of 20 Psi, we start to experience what is known as "spark blowout". This occurs when the cylinder pressures and fuel mixtures become too great for the spark plugs to jump the spark across the gap.
While this helps to prevent the dreaded blow out, it often comes with a price of poor idle. Anytime we close the gap way down, it can lead to a rougher idle. So I know some of you will be thinking, this is why HKS makes the twin power ignition amplifier right?
Yes this was the old school way of combating the above mentioned problems. HKS did a good job with developing the twin power, and it does work pretty well. However, it is still limited by the output voltage of the oem coils!
Fast forward to today. As we have started to see more and more VG's making north of whp, the need for a better, stronger ignition system has never been more important. The answer was simple to find. All I had to do is look to other platforms that have been making higher HP than us for a lot longer than we have! While researching this topic it became very clear to me that the GM LS2 coil packs where the way to go!
Simply put, our coils produce roughly 21k volts. The LS2 coils can produce upwards of 42k volts! That is an impressive improvement from a coil, roughly the same size as our OEM coils. Isn't technology great? Now for the best part. They are always going out and the connections are always wreaking havoc.
Well the good news is the PTU, also called the Igniter, is built in to each coil. This means we get to delete the problematic PTU forever! The performance gains are pretty self explanatory, but the best part about this swap is the cost. Better, stronger spark for less money? Now that is right up my alley!I Actually Got it to Work!! - LS2 Coilpacks - RB 240SX
Not bad. Another non-performance benefit to this MOD is that the coil packs are mounted under the plenum, which allows for the plenum to be shaved and the wiring placed under the plenum. This goes well with the shaved and tucked trend we see a lot of these days.
I have ran these coil packs on my Z since March with no issues. They can be removed to access the spark plugs without pulling the plenum as long as the cover you see in the pics below is not used. Known as the D coil pack.In that time engine technology has improved dramatically and ignition systems have evolved as well.
One of the more popular ignition upgrades on both modern and classic muscle cars is the ignition coil. We recently took a few minutes to talk to Steve Davis of Performance Distributors regarding some common misconceptions and myths about ignition coil upgrades.
Our discussion brought to light several important points about ignition upgrades that the casual enthusiast may not have previously considered.
In the world of performance, more is almost always better. More boost, more airflow, more fuel, more horsepower, more performance, etc. However, more voltage does not always mean better in the world of ignition coils. The key is to maintain coil voltage under load -the acceleration phase, with little or no drop-off. Davis says the key to maintaining consistent voltage throughout the RPM range is in the internal construction of the coil. Doing this allows the coil to more efficiently transfer energy throughout the operating range of the engine.
This might be an area where consumers, even those with a fundamental understanding of how an ignition coil is constructed could make an improper assumption. More windings and heavier gauge material for those windings typically improves the performance of a coil. Davis points out however that often even with those changes an upgraded coil can fit within an OEM size case or housing, or one that is only slightly larger.
Doing so often ensures the coil fits in OEM size packaging, but performs significantly better. This last misconception example is going to exclude modern coil over plug, or coil pack ignition system vehicles, and primarily pertain to the older muscle car crowd, some of you reading this may have no idea what a ballast resistor is. A ballast resistor restricts current flow in an electrical circuit. In an ignition system equipped with a ballast resistor, the ballast resistor restricts current flow to the coil.
If the coil requires a resistor -and your prior coil did not you may very well burn out your new coil in a short period of time.
And conversely, if your new coil manufacturer does not want you to run a ballast resistor -and you did with your prior coil, you may not receive the performance benefit of your new coil. Performance Distributors manufactures a wide array of ignition products for many modern and classic vehicles, including trucks and muscle cars.

High Voltage Coil Packs Round style. Add to Cart. This product is currently sold out. We are proud to release this new product after years of testing and perfecting. Which are very impressive numbers for coils. Many sellers just sell aftermarket coils making claims that they are better than stock without any real testing, but have never put it on a dyno to see actual differences.
We don't release a product unless it produces better results than a factory OEM coil. With several dyno runs, we have tested many aftermarket brands that produce worse power than OEM GM coils, which in our opinion is unacceptable.
This set of 8 coils will fit in place of the stock coils and connect directly to the factory connectors. Once installed, you'll have the power and performance of higher energy ignition.
The Increased spark energy and voltage help improve the combustion process of the fuel mixture to create a more efficient burn. This results is improved throttle response, smooth idle, and quick starts, plus increased high rpm performance! These work fine also for totally factory stock vehicles. There are many variations of LS coils even within the same make and model year, so please check your vehicle to see if you have the round style.
Compare to our pictures or if they are stock coils they are Stamped It will not fit vehicles with the square style coil. The connectors and the way they mount are different so you have to verify they look like the ones pictured.

United States delivery. The complete kit comes with four main sets of components: a coil bracket that fits on the intake side of the valve cover, 4x LS2 truck coils, 4x spark plug wires, and wiring components. Remove the OEM coil packs see the appropriate chassis year section for what to do with the connectors you remove.
Install the LS2 coils onto the bracket with the supplied hardware - note that the latest version of the bracket comes with the coils pre-installed.
De-torque all your valve cover bolts before removing the ones where the bracket goes. Connect the main harness to your coils. Mount the bracket to the intake side of your valve cover and then follow the torque specs and order in the service manual. The spark plug wires are 3 different lengths. A shorter one, a middle one, and two longer ones.
We designed them to be installed long, long, medium, short from front to back, however, you can install these however you want to be the most aesthetically pleasing. On engines the plug wires should fit in without any fuss. Once the wire clicks onto the spark plug, you may need to press the top of the boot a bit to get it to seal nicely in place. The plug wires should fit the lower holes with a slight gap.
For the raised holes, a little trimming is required to slim down the boot. Please follow the guide for your year of car.
The instructions are the same regardless of which year engine you have. The following diagrams maybe be helpful for chassis owners. Cross section of connector.
Insert small screwdriver where marked in blue. Lift the tab circled in red. The wire should then easily pull out the back of the connector. Most issues arise when pinning the wires from the igniter connector to the supplied 3-pin connectors. Unplug and remove the igniter located near the fuse box.
Connect the extension harness to the main LS coil harness and route accordingly so that the other end sits near the 8-way igniter connector.
Three Common Misconceptions About Ignition Coil Upgrades
Note that there are two versions of the main harness. V1 has brown wires, and with that version simply match up the colors of the wires to the patch. V2, which began shipping in Septemberdoes not have any brown wires. With the V2 harness, match up the red wires and the green wires to the patch to ensure they are plugged correctly. Carefully remove the orange secondary lock from the 8-way connector. Using a very small jewelers flat head screwdriver or equivalent, lift the terminal retainer inside the connector and remove the number 2, 3, 6 and 7 terminals from the connector.
Insert the wires into the two provided 3-way connectors following the below tables to ensure the correct positions. There are two brown wires on the harness extension.
